Criteria: 1) fear is out of proportion to actual threat: realization that fear is excessive > avoidance, symptoms must interfere with job or social life. Social phobia: disabling fear of social situation(s) due to fear of scrutiny and negative evaluation by others. Course of the disorder is chronic without treatment. Depends on range of situations avoided; example: someone only afraid of public speaking (teacher in front of class) > specific, afraid of public speaking and using the public restroom etc > generalized.
