When does normality cross over to abnormality. Reports of others -- valuable to know. Methods: stat concept, personal distress, personal dysfunction, violation of norms, diagnosis by an expert. Freq of behaviour or thought defines abnormality. Age differences-- need a lot of data. Stress is a good indicator depending on situation. Not always reliable bc everyone experiences stress differently. Behaviours and/or thoughts negatively impacts a persons ability to function. Lots of behaviours out there that violate norms, but are not psych disorders. Varies on the context-- lots of variance on what violates a norm. Application of the criteria outlined in major classification systems. Diagnostic and stat manual of mental disorders (dsm-5) Criteria that outlines what a psychologist should look for when diagnosing. International classification of mental and behavioural disorders (icd-10) Why diagnose: organization of clinical info, shorthand communication, prediction of natural dev.
