A strong desire to have opposite sex physical characteristics, to be opposite gender, and be treated like opposite sex. Gender nonconformity is not in itself a mental disorder. Verbalization by children required for diagnosis in childhood. Associated with cross-gender behaviours and developmental lag in achieving gender constancy. David rhymer: mishap during circumcision, penis removed, doc told parents it"s best to treat as girl, raised a girl, committed suicide at 30-something years old. After one year of hormone administration and living like gender patient agreements, sex- reassignment surgery is possible. The earlier the transition the better, but hormone administration is started around puberty. Group of disorders involving sexual attraction to unusual objects or unusual sexual activities. Behaviour that causes distress or injury or is coercive.
