To prove guidelines for diagnoses that can inform treatment and management decisions. International statistical classification of diseases, injuries, and causes of death (icd) That require clinical expertise to differentiate from normal life variation and transient responses to stress. Serve as a guide to identify the most prominent symptoms that should be assessed when diagnosing a disorder. Distinctions among members of different categories are qualitative (taxonomy) Place a specific characteristic along an ordered sequence. Dimensional classification: where does the person"s blood pressure fall on a continuum of measurement? (over threshold for diagnosis of hypertension) Continuity between normal and abnormal behaviour not taken into consideration. Axis iv (psychosocial & contextual factors) coded using icd-9-cm v codes (icd-10-cm z codes after oct 2014) Culture-bound syndrome replaced with: (1) cultural syndrome, (2) cultural idioms of distress, and (3) cultural explanations. Combining some disorders into a single bigger category. New conceptualizations for current disorders (eg. ocd is no longer considered an anxiety disorder)
