Cognitive psychology: chapter 2: the cognitive science approach. Scientists need a general framework to guide them, to tell them where to start, what to look for, what to beware of. Metatheory: a general theoretical framework consisting of the assumptions made by practitioners of a science that guide the research activities of those practitioners: meta means above or beyond. The information processing approach was cognitive psychology"s metatheory for years: information processing approach: the approach that described cognition as the coordinated operation of active mental processes within a multicomponent memory system. Mental processing is a sequence of mental operations, each operation taking in information, manipulating or changing it, then forwarding the result to the next stage for processing. A big part of the new cognitive science approach is its multidisciplinary nature: neural basis of cognition is now being used. Some themes are repeated across topics and have been important from the very beginning of modern cognitive psychology in 1879: attention.
