Identify causal affect of iv & dv. Must have internal validity: control extraneous variables, eliminate differential influence - confounds. Random sample - rarely used in experimental research because of cause. & effect (internal validity) vs. generalizing a sample to population (external validity) -> so random sample is for external validity & non-experimental research. E. g. conformity study - hold gender constant. Disadvantages - restricts population size & generalization b) building extraneous variable into research design (blocking) Only when the effect of ev is of interest. E. g. intelligence study - selecting several 3 iq levels that are high, not just one c) yoked control: match participants on temporal sequence of administering an event. Whoever has the higher score shows the effects & results. > yoked to an experimental participant d) matching by equating participants (individual/subject matching): match case by case then randomly assign to groups. Match participant to another participant w/ same iq, age, etc & then assign to a treatment group.
