Intelligence: ability to direct one"s thinking, adapt to one"s circumstances, and learn from one"s experiences. Henry goddard (1866-1957) was one of the first to measure intelligence, discriminatorily toward ellis island immigrants; gave tests to immigrants who got low test scores due to language barrier, stress, etc. In late 1800"s, france required universal education even for those without ability to succeed with instruction. Developed the first intelligence test to identify children who needed remedial education. Tease out underlying natural" intelligence from what learned school. Proposed that a_ mental ability develops with age, and b) the rate of learning is a characteristic of the person and will stay stable. Developed standardized interview to see if a child was performing at correct mental level for age; result is a score called mental age. Teachers were biased; unfair to students that were not as economically stable. Trying to separate child"s natural ability from academic achievement.
