Suggest occurrence of event that came before big bang. Inflation was weird phase transition in state of universe that occurred tiny fraction of a second after creation. Phase change can erupt when bubbles of new phase form & grow. For short time after creation, expansion proceeds normally . Distant points are at very diff temperatures. But deep inside small patches, there"s been enough time for temperatures to. As temperatures dropped, universe got stuck in wrong state. Then a bubble of right phase formed spontaneously & grew exponentially fast. Weird phase transition in very early universe. Proposed to explain unnaturally small temperature correlations at cosmic horizon & unnaturally flat geometry of universe Long before stunning accuracy of recent cmb measurements, which provide very strong evidence that inflation actually happened. Takes idea of vast universe bubble outside of where we are. Phase transitions don"t happen everywhere at once. In fact, bubble universes may be inflating all the time, somewhere/when in a multiverse.
