Pleasure is the only real good thing in life. It is the only true intrinsic value; pain is the only real bad thing. Ultimate life goal: maximize pleasure, minimize pain. Epicurus neutralized physical pain by thinking of mental pain. Institutions founded by philosophers: the garden epicurus, the academy plato, the lyceum aristotle, cyrenaics school - aristippus. First hedonist, student and friend of socrates, founded the cyrenaics school. Preferential pleasures: physical pleasures easier to acquire, more intense than mental pleasures. Short-term / present-moment pleasures certain and accessible. Second but most popular hedonist, first hedonist to have a formalized, written view of hedonism. Moved from samos to athens, bought land, and founded the garden that was open to everyone, including women and slaves. The phrase epicurean (i. e. , epicurean cuisine) means someone who"s a fine chef: hedonists are not about luxuries and fine cuisine, they appreciate the simpler pleasures in life. He suggested looking at babies to see the simple life.

Reflection Question: What do you value?

I value vacations and playing video games. I put forward the idea these are valuable things to me. However, playing video games is only an instrumental value. In other words, young students play video games because they receive joy and satisfaction from playing video games. Do you agree?

Question 1: Is traveling the world (vacations abroad) desirable because it is instrumentally valuable, i.e., only valuable because it will help you achieve or acquire other things you desire? Is this because you think it is bad (unpleasant) in itself or just neutral (neither desirable nor undesirable)? Or is traveling the world also intrinsically valuable, i.e. valuable for its own sake? If so, why?

J. J. Thomson is best known for his discoveries about the nature ofcathode rays. His other important contribution was the invention,together with one of his students, of the mass spectrometer, adevice that measures the ratio of mass m to (positive) charge q ofan ion.

The spectrometer consists of two regions as shown in the figure. Inthe first region an electric field accelerates the ion and in thesecond the ion follows a circular arc in a magnetic field. Theradius of curvature of the arc can be measured and then the m/qratio can be found.
