Psyc 330 lecture 5 divided attention and automaticity. Part 1: doing two things at the same time. Initially hard to do at first, but after practice, they get quite good at doing things at the same time. Overlapping videos; hard to concentrate on both. Doing two things at the same time when one captures our attention. Shadowing verbal message; sight reading/ : kind of like driving manual transmission, difficult to explain practice effects with filter model, replications: reading/ taking dictation (30 words/ minute); typing/ Broadbent tried arguing that the filter could be switched from task to task. A new metaphor: attention is like a resource. Hard to explain and show, but it is somewhat like a battery. Kahneman took credit in developing this model (attentional resource model) More resources available when we are awake and fully alert. More complex task, the pupils are bigger: attentional demand for complex tasks go down more with practice.
