There are 3 ideologies that come out of the 19th century that influence the 20th century: Stalin starts a bolshevik revolution which is about freeing the workers. However, in russia there were no workers because there was no industrialization. Therefore, he does this with the peasants instead of the worker. He overthrows the czar kills his family. The ultimate goal of the communist movement is to eliminate private property. Nationhood becomes the stepping stone towards a communist movement towards a class oriented society. Class takes precedent over nation: this is why the soviet union is divided into 15 socialist republics. Within this you would have autonomous republics. They are all given science unions, art unions, literature unions. All of the things that speak to national unity. The idea was that your national identity was still there but it was subordinate to the working class.
