Document Summary

Vector = the one that transmits the disease. Parasite = organism that they are transmitting: two people who receive. Vector borne disease - transmitted by vertebrate: 8/10 tropical diseases are vector borne. How does it transmit parasite: bite an infected individual - parasite goes into them and they pass it on. Cpt = parasite multiplies inside vector and changes form: vectors cause significant disease to us. 40% of world population at risk for contracting malaria. Problem w/ vector resistance to insecticides, plasmodium resistance to drugs, no vaccines have made malaria an excellent example of a re-emerging infectious disease. We don"t know if malaria was present in americas before: distribution tends to be tropical, sub-tropical, mosquitoes, don"t have period of no mosquitoes where we can treat infected people (cold) Human malaria: most important = vivax and falciparum.
