Life expectancy in usa: 30th in the world. Us spends almost half as much as the world. Economic status = wealthier means you live longer = easier access to basic needs. College tuition has increased so much, that many people cannot attend. Some people scared that if they take job, medical insurance will come off. No control in life = stress response. Stress hormones = glucose = raise blood pressure = sends cortisol. Working too long = too much cortisol. Causes areas of brain to shrink = age faster/lower life expectancy. Monkeys controlled under stress: cellular functions lower = chronic stress. Cold study: lower social class = more illness/cold. More time to exercise/no huge demands on the job/healthy choices of eating/money to buy. Risks factors associated with childhood = poorer life expectancy. Skin color: black people die earlier than white no matter how much money they make. Racism: lot"s of excess death in blacks.
