Document Summary

The purpose of this briefing note is to present options and a recommendation to improve the quality of the healthcare received by women in rural areas. In the past, women have not been seen as equivalent to men and thus have been neglected in health policies. In recent years this situation has made great strides with the legalization of abortion and increased understanding of the diseases women face. Furthermore, because of the rise in female cancers, particularly breast and ovarian cancer, woman in rural areas need to have cancer treatment/scanning facilities available to them in rural regions. As a result, women in rural areas are getting a much lower quality of care compared to their urban counterparts and have lower health outcomes. Options: all physicians working in rural environments needs to have some experience and training in maternity care and family doctors/physicians working in rural areas must have the skills to support uncomplicated births.
