Digestive system - physical & chemical breakdown of food, absorbs, processes and stores food. Goal = breakdown food into usable units and dispose of the rest: many hormones that regulate activity of gi tract that produce feelings of hunger, appetite. Mucosa - innermost layer of epithelial cells, protect lining, allow food to pass smoothly, produce digestive enzymes and absorptive cells. Submucosa - layer of loose connective tissue containing blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, nerves. Muscularis - 2 layers of orthogonal layer of smooth muscle that move food along tract (peristalsis). Swallowing movement is governed by autonomic ns control of smooth muscles = involuntary. Heartburn: occurs when stomach passes into esophagus (acid reflux, chronic called gerd. Some drugs neutralize stomach acid while other present hcl secretion by oxyntic cells. Secretes several enzymes: trypsin - digests proteins, lipases - digests fat, pancreatic amylase- digests carbs. Secretes bicarbonate into small intes to neutralize stomach acid (ph adjustment).
