Document Summary

Week 4: slavery, abolition, and the plantation system in the west indies. Colonial government developed at a conservative pace and often modeled its ruler. Fertile tropical countries - were useful for cash crops. Cash crop = a crop produced for its commercial value rather than for use by the grower (use of exports for a profit). Cotton and tobacco as well as sugar cane. Caribbean sugar plantations (mostly in jamaica) produced the most profits for great. Raw materials produced in the colonies, were exported to britain, than manufactured/processed into finished goods in great britain, finally the finished good is exported to other world markets (non-imperial) consumed by british or sold back to the colonies. Colonial produce was exported in its raw form so that colonies wouldn"t industrialize and could buy materials at a cheaper price. Other ways in which great britain made money in imperial trade: Money made on shipping and storing these goods.
