Other people will adopt chinese culture: sinicization. Minyue: today"s fujian; defeated and assimilated by han. Nanyue: today"s guangdong, guangxi, yunnan, northern vietnam: co-exist and allowed intermarriage; maintained culture while absorbing chinese culture; developed cantonese. Xiongnu, qiang, etc: moved to central plain. Northern wei dynasty: greatly promoted chinese culture. Nomadic to sedentary: learned chinese classics and farming. Many xianbei people lost the ability of riding on a horse and archery. Debating sinicization: northern wei faced struggles; divided into two countries; one xianbei and one sinicized. Ethnicity and identity formation became and important part of state expansion and local governance. Native rule and nativeness were constructed and manipulated during encounters.
