Modern familiar essay = personal experience: some essays (e. g. on going home) = often show a level of wider concerns & generality. Sometimes a recognizable formal voice = mixed in w/the predominant familiarity & anecdote. Challenge = recognize & unpack the subtle changes in voice/perspective ( close reading ) In-depth reading = forms the basis for decisions about own writing & can show difference between familiar/formal style. Multiple voices in the familiar essay (its polyphony) & difficulties found w/shifts in levels of voice. & generality = can make good subjects for own writing. Literary criticism/literary theory = formal discourse about literature, including the familiar essay. Summary: reviews use similar techniques across a variety of types of text, the reviewer"s critical, formal voice = has the following elements: Use of the literary or other specialist terms. Inclusion of levels of detail & generality controlled by the length allowed, the greater the length the more detail.
