Document Summary

Introduction to jane austen and the nineteenth-century novel. Jane austen was born in steventon, hampshire on december 16, 1775, into a lively and literary family, where she was the seventh of eight children. Reverend george austen, ran a school as well as the parish, and by all accounts her childhood was happy. Austen wrote six novels: sense and sensibility (1811), pride and prejudice (1813), mansfield. Park (1814), emma (1816), northanger abbey and persuasion (1818). Since her death in 1817, her juvenile writings and later manuscript works (including letters) have also been published in various forms. In this course we will be looking at emma, which was the final novel she was alive to see published; traditional scholarship has viewed emma as austen at the height of her powers. Jane austen was alive during a time of extreme social and political change.
