Document Summary

Econ 105 lecture 3 interdependence and gains from trade: gains from specialization and trade, absolute advantage, comparative advantage, the principle of comparative advantage, applications. Your company is establishing a trucking business in a mythical place called forestland. The managers have noticed that women are paid /hour whereas men are paid /hour there, and they suggest that hiring women would be more cost-effective than hiring men. We need to know the nature of the job and how productive they are: how much they produce. If women produce about the same amount as men, they should fire men. If women produce less than half of the products men are capable of producing in the same period of time, then they should keep the men. Two ways to satisfy wants: self-sufficiency- people can rely on themselves and produce whatever they need, specialization and trade- people can focus on the good they are better at producing and trade.
