For lloyd, essence of natural law lies in claim that there are objective moral principles depending on nature of universe & which can be discovered by reason. Natural law based on idea that there should be connection b/w rules governing human behavior & certain truths about human nature. Analogy - for natural lawyer, rules of nature are like mathematical axioms - which exist independently of what we think about them or even whether we recognize them. Norms are universal, unchangeable & apply equally to everyone. Basic feature of all natural law theories - concern w/ idea that there is higher law existing independently of positive law . Concern leads natural lawyers to ask number of questions. True law is right reason in agreement with nature; it summons to duty by its commands, and averts from wrongdoing by its prohibitions.
