Crim332 lecture 1: morality, rights talk and law. Law as a set of social practices. Interaction of law, legal institutions, legal behaviour. More than what is written in the books. What we view as right or wrong. Shapes expectations for behaviour of others and selves. The law is a lens in which we interpret our experiences. Laws 100 years ago dramatically diff than today. Social/historic condition affects laws that are constructed. Diff countries have diff interpretations and def"n of legal behaviour. Heterogeneity of canadian pop breeds conflict and tension. Referendum 49% yes, 51% no to leaving canada. Each group wants their values to be reflected in the law. Immigrants carry on cultural traditions from home country. Difficult for law to accommodate all cultures. Violation of the law is dependent on the social context and wider social circumstances. Decision to lift ban on assisted suicide. Reversed decision in scc r. v. rodriguez (1993) Asked same qs but resulted in opposite decision.
