Eat and work together, no speaking, gesturing. Major problems in the prison system and alcohol problems as well as corrupt officers and prisoners who were misbehaving. Symbolized a moral architecture reflect themes of order and morality. Prisoners in kingston separated by gender and type of offence. Lives centered on hard labour and discipline. Strict silence, inmate walked in lockstep, days were controlled by constant ringing of bells. Breaches of prison regulations brought swift / harsh punishment: conditions in kingston led to creation of a royal commission in 1848 brown. Investigated charges of mismanagement, theft, and mistreatment of convicts. Warden henry smith was found to have mismanaged the institution and excessive use of corporal punishment (flogging of people, including children as young as 11) was fired.
