Sociology is the study of social relations/ forces/ conduct/ conventions/ constraints/institutions. Social structure and crime written by robert merton. Difference between classical school and positive school. Durkheim argued that crime and deviance are not kind of sickness. Criminal subculture: organized slums, preexisting criminal networks, profit-making, mentors. Conflict subculture: disorganized slums, disconnected youth did not have access to organized criminals networks, rebelled against society/ middle class values, characterized by violence. Retreatist cultures: drug subculture, required enough double failures, used drugs to solve status discontentment. Social disorganization theorists emphasize the nature of the neighborhood over the individual. Shaw & mckay discussed 5 elements of social disorganization: poverty, cultural and ethnic heterogeneity, residence mobility, residence density, broken families. Social disorganization theory: sometimes referred to as environmental criminology, ecological criminology, or social ecology, examines relationship between people and their environment, foundation for community structure and crime: testing social-disorganization. Theory, and economic deprivation and neighborhood crime rates.
