Located the source of crime within the individual. Didnt look at the influence of social environment. Cities grew at rapid rate during later half of 1800s. Cities grew through successive waves of immigrants. Also grew through displaced farm workers and blacks moving from rural south. Laborers putting in 12hr days, 6 days a week. Rejected social darwinism notion the poor were biologically inferior. People were poor due to social environment. Criticized the human costs of unbridled economic growth; industrialiazation. Argued that the american dream did not reach the slums and the ghettos. Believed that social reform was the answer. Believed that the government could be trusted to carry it out. Sociology department at uni of chicago was the first one in the us. The chicago school also referred to the ecological school because of its ecological studies. Chicago school saw city as a natural human environment, or as a microsom of humanity.
