CRIM 104 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: George Herbert Mead, Kai T. Erikson, Harold Garfinkel
Document Summary
The sociology of deviance, the labeling perspective and critical constructionism. Howard becker and kai erikson, two of the foremost thinkers in the sociology of deviance and the labeling perspective, both did their graduate studies in sociology at the university of chicago. Most theorists associated with the labeling perspective and the sociology of deviance were influenced by symbolic interactionism of chicago school theorists, e. g. , w. i. Thomas, george herbert mead, and charles horton cooley. The labeling perspective became the predominant explanation of crime and deviance during the 1960"s, and held its own into the mid-1970"s. The labeling perspective takes the position that once an individual is labeled as a deviant or criminal, this becomes his or her master status, which in turn becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. Crime and deviance are socially constructed- i. e. , social groups make up rules and then apply them to individuals or groups who come to be regarded as outsiders or social outcasts.
