Estimates of the number of sex ofences committed are typically derived from two main sources: surveys of the public. General social survey: a survey conducted by statistic canada where people over age 14 was telephoned: sexual ofences were restricted to sexual touching and sexual attacks against victims at least 14 years or older. Less than 10% of sexual assaults were reported. Reporting was lightly higher when only more violent forms of sexual assault were considered. Common reasons for not reporting included o o. Felt it was a personal matter o: did not want to get involved with the police. Uniform crime reporting survey: reports on the incident of crimes reported to police in a given year and some of the characteristics of those crimes: ucr includes ofences against victims of all ages and areas. Gss does not: ucr also have ofenses that vary in severity and other sexual ofences. Clearance rates were lower for sexual ofences than other violent ofences.
