2013 nsduh: 15. 9% of americans > 12 years used illicit drugs in the past year ofenders are at 20-79% Early drug use is common, linked to adverse outcomes. Drug overdose was the leading cause of injury death in 2012. For ages 25-64, overdose caused more deaths than mvas. Cdc (2014): 114 dies per day as a result of od and 6,478 are treated in emergency rooms. Complex relationship between the substance abuse and crime. 2013 ontario student drug use and health survey. Survey of 10,272 ontario students from grade 7 -12. Many drugs currently illegal were once legitimately used. Did reduce the number of drug addicts, but spawned a number of black markets with these sales of drugs. Bc enacted this in 1917, and repealed it in 1921. Tolerance: progressively decreased responsiveness to a drug. Physical dependence: psychological distress & physical pain during withdrawal. Primary pd: overwhelming desire to use drug (positive reinforcement)
