Criminology: scientific study of crime and criminal behaviour, including forms, causes, legal aspects, prevention, and control. Cj: study of crime, criminal law, and components of the cjs. At least 4 definitional perspectives can be found. On a spectrum in terms of their fluidity. Criminal law: regulates arrangements bw individuals, regulates actions w potential to harm state interests. Provides defences to criminal charges: insanity plea, self defense, duress, automatism, etc, types of criminal laws indictable offences. Murder, sexual assault, etc: can be 2 yrs, 5 yrs, life, etc. summary conviction offences. 6 months in jail hybrid offences dual procedure: crown has a choice to make it summary or indictable, the charter emphasizes individual rights state should not abuse its power or its citizens. Judicial power to invalidate law that unjustifiably infringes protected right of individuals: the right to die. First brought to supreme court by sue rodriguez in 1993.
