Frederick thrasher (a sociologist from the chicago school) was one of the. 1st to offer a detailed definition of a gang. Thrasher said that a gang could be identified by six characteristics: 3. a sense of organization, solidarity and morale that is superior to that exhibited by the mob: a tendency to move through space and meet a hostile element, which can precipitate cooperative, planned conflict. 5. the creation of a shared esprit de corps and a common tradition or heritage of memories. 6. a propensity for some geographic area or territory, which it will defend through force if necessary. I(cid:374)(cid:272)e th(cid:396)ashe(cid:396)(cid:859)s (cid:1005)9(cid:1006)7 defi(cid:374)itio(cid:374), there have been 100s of definitions advanced. There is considerable disagreement within the literature as to what constitutes a gang. Some say that to be meet the definition, the gang must have at least 3 members; others say that the gang must have at least 5 members.
