COGS 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Virtual Reality Therapy, Reality Therapy, Virtual Reality
Document Summary
People perceive the external world through the five sense; hearing, smelling, touching, tasting and seeing (riva, 2003). If one of the senses is substituted by an artificial source, then the individual may enter an artificial word (riva, 2003). With the help of modern technology, virtual reality can make this possible; for a person to dispatch from reality and enter a synthetic world. It can help escape the world we live in and therefore provide a release from pain, discomfort or medical problems. This paper will attempt to argue that virtual reality is beneficial in treating people with acrophobia and agoraphobia. It will explain what virtual reality is, what acrophobia and agoraphobia is, why has it been suggested to work, as well as ethical issues that arise from such technology. Virtual reality is a three-dimensional computer-generated simulation and a communication interface that creates an illusion for the participant (riva, 2003).
