Document Summary
Social construction of technology: focuses on the evolution of technologies over time. Technology is an evolutionary process (conflict, competition, strategy, and power); its process is not a straight line. This challenges the idea that technologies are: in the eye of the inventor, finished once invented (e. g. , just look at the apple iphone), separate from social influence. Social construction of technology approach de-essentializes technological artefacts. Rhetorical closure- where controversies are redefined e. g. by advertising. Redefinition of the problem- where a new issue is defined that everyone can agree to a particular technical solution. Assumed knowledge/ common sense reinforcing dominant ideology - controls relationship between our thinking and actions. Common sense uses a logic to help us not to think; rhetorical closure; redefinition of the problem. However, that does not mean that the technology cannot control us. Convergence: the notion of convergence comes from failure; ***slides; social construction of technology; technology"s role in bringing people together vs. the marriage of convenience.
