The story after the boosters and skeptics is the third one: we are in a sea of data yet it takes us months/years to make meaning of all this available data. The skeptic"s view: a dystopian genre that looks at society and tries to understand the role of tech in this dystopic society. Their point of view is informed by power-relations power and conflict. Surveillance: foucault talks about two types of power: (1) brutal power capital punishment, guns, etc (the state always has this power); (2) laws (cultural social contracts). Bentham"s panopticon : we are always being watched, we act as if we are being watched. Other scholars have pushed other powers : class, gender, race, etc. things that arise when democracy is not working properly. Network analysis (another type of surveillance) is one of the more powerful technology that mines data, and looks at connections between different data points; can analyze massive amounts of data; was used after 9/11.
