Week 8: neoliberal perspectives: celebrations of information society. This week looks at the last forty years. Neoliberalism is the core of what we"re looking at: has become the dominant paradigm during this time, likely in the beginnings of some sort of decline. Not sustainable because greed cannot go on forever. Streams of critical theory (review: critical political economy. Media used to encourage people to buy in": cultural theory. Sees workers as unconsciously attached to capitalism. Sees media as a drug for the masses: hesmondhalgh provides convergence between the two. Neoliberalism: celebrates information society (beliefs that people have about it, dominant paradigm, celebratory in approach. Lots of economic prosperity to celebrate: information society is new, past problems are disappearing, technological determinist quality, dramatic changes made during this time. Part of a new economic bubble (1990s) Economic orthodoxy pre-1980s: early 20th century focused on neo-classical liberalism. Minimal government involvement: changes were made after wwi.
