Communication models: shapes and defined by the interests of the people studying the field. Communication is about how information goes from point a to point b. Communication theories focus on how the information is encoded and understood versus what was said. Claude shannon wasn"t interested in the meaning but the information is encoded, how it"s processed. Repetition and redundancy are ways to ensure information was encoded properly. Monological model: one way movement of information from an identifiable sender to one or more receivers (monologue) - mono: single, logue: speaker. Semantic noise: things that interfere with a message having to do with ambiguity, meanings, cultural factors. Something you don"t understand that interferes with transmission of language. Semantic noise is a matter of content. The action model: the monological, action model of communication is a linear model in which meaning is transferred through space from one agent to another by means of a communication medium such as speech or writing.
