Motivation depends on the person and the situation. Intrinsic motivation: drive to engage in an activity is intrinsic. Human beings have an innate curiosity and playfulness. But later in life a lot of activities are done for an extrinsic reward. Extrinsic motivation: engaging in an activity to attain some separable (pay , recognition_) Activities can feel more controlled or more autonomous: controlled: preventing punishment or feeling guilty, autonomous: behavior has meaning, or is in line with personal goals. More autonomous activities: greater well being, higher performance. How can we nurture intrinsic motivation and make extrinsic motivation more autonomous: autonomy, belonging, competence.
