Review for the lab: fruits (lec from feb 12) Evolution of fruits fruits play a role in dispersal of mature seed and have evolved in relation to their dispersal agents. Development of the fruit was an important factor in the success of the angiosperms. Fate of other floral structures after fertilization: styles and stigmas shrivel. Except in multiple fruits petals shrivel & fall off (too expensive to maintain) Ovary (most cases) develops into a fruit in some cases, receptacle and/or petals become part of fruit calyx stays attached to the fruit. Wall of ovary is the pericarp, which differentiates into 3 parts: 1) exocarp, 2) mesocarp, 3) endocarp, these can be very difficult to differentiate in some fruits. Simple fruits: develop from one carpel of several united carpels: fleshy soft and fleshy, dry woody or papery, dehiscent. Aggregate fruits: number of separate carpels of one gynoecium (single flower: example: magnolia, raspberry, strawberry, peony.
