Document Summary
Initial interaction and history of ischemic vascular disease. The initial assessment of someone for cardiovascular risk begins with an observation of their age and apparent age, weight, demeanor, and other factors such as the smell of cigarette smoke. The age, marital status, and occupation of the individual all relate to risk for vascular disease and should be obtained. Secondary prevention is defined as efforts to prevent further disease or events in the presence of known vascular disease. In the absence of known previous vascular disease or events, the assessment and management is known as primary prevention. Other heart-related illnesses such as palpitations or an enlarged heart from a viral illness do not usually place an individual in the secondary prevention category on their own. The patient should be asked if they have ever had their cholesterol profile checked, and if so, what the results were.
