General: head trauma results in more fatalities than any other sports injury. Priority first aid for any head injury: life-threatening conditions, specifically loss of breathing: common in collision/contact sports (has also been reported in non-contact sports) Athletes should undergo annual baseline examinations before competitive season. Include: clinical history (symptoms), physical/neurological evaluations, motor control measures, neurocognitive fxn. Athletes who get direct blow to head/body contact that makes head snap backward/forward/rotate to side must be carefully evaluated for brain injury: concussion = type of traumatic brain injury. Can be caused by: direct blow to head/face/neck/elsewhere on body, w/ force transmitted to head: may result in: disorientation, amnesia, motor/coordination/balance deficits, unconsciousness (rarely majority don"t experience); majority have dizziness, headaches, blurred vision, concentration problems. If no life-threatening condition exists: note length of time patient unconscious, don"t move until they regain consciousness, once patient regains consciousness/never lost consciousness, get patient history, history. Primary purpose: establish if the patient sustained concussion.
