Unit 3: Anthropometric Measurements
• Sheldonian somatotyping system is based n photoscopic ratings.
o Subjective evaluation of the shape of a person using a 3-component scale with ratings of
1-7.
• A new way was created to predict somatotype components which was a more objective way
based on anthropometric measurements. Scale was more than 7 limitations.
• Terminology for the system (Heath-Carter)
o Endomorphy (1st component) – referred to the relative fatness in physique
o Mesomorphy (2nd component) – refers to the relative development of musclo-skeleton
system
o Ectomorphy (3rd component) – refers to the relative linearity of physique
• Rating of each begins at 0 and can go high as 12, an calculated using either a regression
equation or rating form.
o WE USED REGRESSION EQUATIONS
Some Characteristics of Body Types:
Endomorphy:
• Large anterior – posterior diameter of body segments
• Soft skin
• Heavy breasts
• Neck short and thick, head is large and round, face is wide and round
• Short tapering limbs. Weak extremities, small hands and feet.
• Ass is heavy and fat with no dimpling
• Vertebral is usually straight
• Bones are small, skin is soft smooth velvety
Mesomorphy:
• Body appears hard with mass that is uniformly distributed
• Muscles are massive, prominent, and defined
• Ribs strong, heavy, neck is long and strong
• Pelvic girdle is broad and strong
• Wrists, hands, and fingers are large
• Thighs and lower legs are heavily muscles and uniformly proportioned
• Buttocks are muscled with dimpling
Ectomorphy:
• Linearity, fragility, and delicacy of body
• Small delicate bones, small A-P diameter
• Shoulder is drooped
• Ribs delicate and prominent
• Buttocks are flat small and thin
• Fingers usually fragile and long
Document Summary
Unit 3: anthropometric measurements: sheldonian somatotyping system is based n photoscopic ratings, subjective evaluation of the shape of a person using a 3-component scale with ratings of. 1-7: a new way was created to predict somatotype components which was a more objective way based on anthropometric measurements. Large anterior posterior diameter of body segments: soft skin, heavy breasts, neck short and thick, head is large and round, face is wide and round, short tapering limbs. Weak extremities, small hands and feet: ass is heavy and fat with no dimpling, vertebral is usually straight, bones are small, skin is soft smooth velvety. Linearity, fragility, and delicacy of body: small delicate bones, small a-p diameter, shoulder is drooped, ribs delicate and prominent, buttocks are flat small and thin, fingers usually fragile and long. Iliospinale: landmark at the point of the hip is a horizontal line marked on the skin level with the undersurface of the anterior superior iliac spine.
