Document Summary

Arthrology = anatomy, function, dysfunction and treatment of joints. Provides attachment points for muscles = creates lever system that enables body movement. Red bone marrow produces red and white blood cells and platelets. Skeletal muscle create movements by pulling on bones. Bones serve as levers, and joints act as fulcrums. Longitudinal growth of a bone occurs at the epiphyseal plate (epiphyseal line on diagram), which is a layer of cartilage. The proliferating cartilage cells are gradually replaced by bone. Bone tissue is composed of widely separated cells, called osteocytes surrounded by matrix. Matrix is about 25% water, 25% protein (mainly collagen), Bone is continually being remodeled in response to mechanical stress and absence of stress. Long bones = longer then they are wide (femur) Short bones = wider then they are long (wrist/ankle) Flat longs = flat and broad surface (ribs) Irregular bones = do not fit into any other bone category (vertebrae)
