Hooking up-sexual activity with a casual partner who may be a friend or stranger. Helps you learn how to converse with others, helps you know more about others, and provides an opportunity to share feelings, opinions, and interests. Characterized by a high level of emotional arousal, reciprocal liking and mutual sexual desire. Mature love-relationships often start with passionate love and evolve into companionate love. Crucial ingredients for commitment: shared values, a willingness to change in response to each other, a willingness to tolerate flaws, a match in religious beliefs, the ability to communicate effectively. Married people are healthier and have increased longevity compared to non-married people. Selection theory: healthy people are more attractive, more likely to get married. Protection theory: married people look after each other, support each other.
