Document Summary

The cell is the basic living unit of all organisms. Cell membrane: outermost component of cell, forming boundary between materials inside (intracellular) and outside (extracellular) of cell. Acts as barrier that determines what enters/exits cell. Major molecules that make them are phospholipids and proteins (additionally carbohydrates and cholesterol: phospholipids are formed as a double layer making a lipid barrier between inside and outside cell content. The cell membrane is selectively permeable allow some substances to enter but not others. Intracellular content has different composition than extracellular content so cell"s survival depends on maintaining this difference i. e. enzymes, glycogen and k+ have [higher] intracellularly. Diffusion: movement of ions/molecules to move from [high] to [low] results from natural, constant, random motion of solutes in a solution. Concentration gradient: the difference in [ ] of a solute in a solvent between 2 points divided by the distance between them. The larger the [ ] difference the steeper the [ ] gradient.
