Document Summary

Chemical messengers: allow communication between cells to regulate body activity hormones!! Es is composed of endocrine glands and specialized cells secretes small amt of hormones into bloodstream travels to target tissues/effectors produce coordinated response. Exocrine have ducts that secrete to outside of body or into hollow organ (i. e. stomach) Exocrine secretions include saliva, sweat, milk, digestive enzymes. Hormones: regulate almost every physiological process in body. 2 categories of hormones: (based on chem composition) Lipid-soluble hormones: nonpolar, includes steroid, thyroid & fatty acid derivative hormones: transport of lipid-soluble hormones travel in bloodstream via binding proteins (***helps increase hormone lifespan & keep them from diffusing out of capillaries) 3 types of stimuli that stimulate hormone release: Stimulation by humoral stimuli: blood-borne chemicals that stimulate release of hormones: sensitive to glucose (insulin), calcium (pth) and sodium (adh) blood levels. Stimulation by neural stimuli: where neurotransmitters released in synapses stimulate cells to hormone secretion.
