Fibroblast growth factor top and posterior fin bud. Fgf and shh work together to form fin bud. If retinoic acid is applied, gill arch has duplication of gill rays. When inhibitors are added for fgf and shh there are deletions of gill rays or truncations of gill rays. Shh and fgf are involved in both development of gills and fins in skates. If treat with retinoic acid, it mimics shh in both gills and fins, and causes duplication. When treat with inhibitors of shh and fgf you cause similar mutations in both gills and fins.
