BISC 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Yellow Jacket, Ecological Niche, Character Displacement
Document Summary
Community = assemblage of various species inhabiting a common environment and interacting with one another. Interspecific interactions: competition = interaction between organisms using the same limiting resources. Provides risk for individual but benefit to species (sample to know if toxic) Batesian mimicry: harmless or eatable species mimics a harmful or distasteful species. Mullerian mimicry: 2 or more unpalatable species mimic each other (bees and yellow jacket) Mutualism = interaction between two species that benefits both species: mycorrhizal interactions symbiotic relationship between plant roots and fungi. Plants obtain nutrients from the fungi; fungi obtain organic carbon from the plants. Mycorrhizae can connect multiple plants: carbon travels between plants through fungi. Early succession (less than 20 years) scattered small plants (fireweed, willow, and dryas); no trees; developing organic soil. Mid succession (~100 years) alder, with some spruce; forest with fast growing and sun loving tree species.
