ARCH 131 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Atapuerca Mountains, Wonderwerk Cave, Kebara Cave
Document Summary
1886 spy d"orneau, belgium (2 skeleton) almost complete. 1890s 1930s very productive years for discoveries for neandertal remains, mostly by. Old man with arthritis, lost a lot of teeth. Again, no proof because it was amateurs who found it and they had dug up the entire cave, so no one knew the state in which they were found. Initially remains of 6 individuals were found: adult male, adult female, 3 children, 1 infant. 3rd child found in 1973, so 7 individuals in total. So many individuals in 1 site led people to again propose intentional burial or neandertal burial sites. However, we now know they weren"t dated from the same time, they were from different times. 9 individuals, excavated by an american professor, claimed it was intentional burial. But he didn"t do a good job; didn"t take enough photos or make enough drawings to prove to people now that these were intentional burials.
