ARCH 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Kebara Cave, Magdalenian, Ain Mallaha
Document Summary
Large pleistocene herds (which provided food, clothing, and even shelter) start to disappear. Cooperative hunting was less productive (better suited to hunting herds). Resources like fish became plentiful and accessible around newly created lakes, marshes, and rivers. People created new technologies and strategies for exploiting these resources. This new way of life marks the beginning of the mesolithic. Occurs just prior to the end of the pleistocene. Epi-paleolithic ~18,000 years ago. (epi-paleolithic is the mesolithic in the me) Kebara cave, israel is a famous epi-paleolithic site. Mesolithic in most of europe starts at the close of the pleistocene. Roughly 11,000 years ago (follows the upper paleolithic magdalenian period) to 5,500 years ago. Permanent northward movements of seasonal ranges of large migratory species like reindeer. At least 35 mammalian genera went extinct at the end of the pleistocene. Several species of giant sloths measuring up to 20 feet. All went extinct between 11,000 10,000 years ago.
