Structure of contemporary Canadian policing
Policing is the largest component of the Canadian criminal justice system
Five Canadian police services account for over 60% of all police officers in Canada
a. RCMP, Toronto police Service, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Surete du Quebec
(SQ) and city of Montreal police service (service de police de la Ville de Montreal, or
SPVM)
Divisions:
1. Operational Patrol: patrol division, canine unit, identification squad, traffic, reserve or
auxiliary
2. Investigative: general investigation(detectives), major crimes, sexual offences
3. Support Services: information technology, communications center, victim services,
community services and crime prevention
4. Administrative: finance and payroll, property office
5. Human resources: staff development, recruiting, training
6. Office of the chief

a. Commissioned officers
Chief constable, deputy chief constable
Deputy commissioner, superintendents and inspectors
b. Noncommissioned officers
