Complementary and alternative medicine (cam) are group of health care practices and products that is used together with conventional or western medicine. For example, when aromatherapy is used help lessen a patient"s discomfort after a surgery. Alternative medicine on the other hand is used in place of conventional medicine. An example of alternative medicine would be when a patient uses acupuncture as the only treatment for their headache. Integrative medicine is the approach of combining both western medicine and complementary and alternative medicine in order to improve safety and achieve effective care. Use of cam therapies in cultures world wide. 70% of the population in canada have used complementary medicine at least once. In china, the use of traditional herbal preparations is about 30%-50% of the total medicinal consumption. In african countires such as ghana, mali, nigeria and zambia, herbal medicine is the first line of treatment for 60% of children with high fever resulting from malaria.
